The general carpenter possesses a broad range of carpentry skills from rough framing to light finish work. They can read and interpret drawings and specs, and understand how to safely layout and frame walls, floors, stairs, roofs systems, windows and doors with an eye for precision. General carpenters own a variety of basic and specialty tools to execute the daily work plan with the direction of the site foreman and superintendent.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Assist with pickup framing, finish carpentry, site protection etc.
  • Prepare and execute the daily work plan, ensuring that any slipping deadlines are identified early and new deadlines are communicated to the Foreman and Superintendent
  • Work and plan with subcontractors to make sure the project is ready for them to begin work each day
  • Layout and set concrete forms, place re-steel for footings and foundations
  • Framing layout and rough framing of walls, floors and roof systems, ability to calculate roof rafters, layout and frame stairs, windows and doors
  • Provide mentoring and coaching to fellow carpenters, laborers and apprentice carpenters
  • Identify when other workers or subcontractors are not working in a safe manner and report unsafe practices to the Foreman or Superintendent

Qualifications and Skills

  • 4+ years of high-end carpentry experience (residential preferred)
  • Valid driver’s license, occasional driving of a company vehicle may be required for this position
  • Must complete or already have acquired the appropriate safety training commensurate with the position and location
  • Ability to follow instructions, take notes and perform work as designated
  • Ability to be an active listener, ask for help and suggest solutions
  • Demonstrate discretion and treat all proprietary company information as strictly confidential outside, and in some cases within, the company
  • Be a team player and foster a positive and constructive attitude environment onsite
  • Exhibit good manners, respect for the team, subcontractors and clients
  • Consistently work toward a high level of accuracy and efficiency
  • Continually learn and develop new skills and capabilities
  • Advocate for safety in action and attitude; reinforce awareness to reduce risk of injury to self and others
  • Possess technical and working knowledge of building methods and construction practice
  • Possess basic knowledge of safety and health procedures (ongoing safety training provided)
  • Ability to manage stress and maintain composure in challenging situations
  • Demonstrate accountability
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with a wide variety of people
  • Demonstrate and support a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion
