The role of foreman requires excellent attention to detail and the ability to maintain a safe and productive job site. Precise and clear communication with all field crew and subtrades is required to support the superintendent in meeting schedule demands. Foremen are “bags-on”, putting work in place while also coordinating and lining out crew and subtrades. This role is critical to building a cohesive team that understands the expectations around daily production goals, quality, and design intent.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Anticipate problems, offer solutions based on experience, estimate materials and time to perform work proposed
  • Run small projects as a working lead; coordinate and direct crew and subs to maximize productivity
  • Develop daily schedule and be responsible for its execution
  • Make staffing recommendations to superintendent; evaluate work performed on site, mentor and train
  • Schedule and manage subcontractors to ensure work is completed to code and according to plan
  • Be the company representative with the superintendent is not on site
  • Discuss work with clients, architects, partners and inspectors with integrity, clarity and patience
  • Maintain effective, respectful communication at all times with field crew, subs, clients, partners and team
  • Minimize material use to prevent waste and unnecessary cost
  • Manage material deliveries, handling, storage, and placement
  • Be a positive advocate for safety in action and attitude; reinforce awareness to reduce the risk of injury or citation and know OSHA requirement for your location and site
  • Maintain job site security (ie. ensure safety of all people, tools, and materials)
  • Maintain accurate documentation in the daily job log
  • Plan and communicate site production expectations with crew daily; participate in quality control
  • Manage building layout & dimensional control, proficient with use of builder's level
  • Coach others on proper tool use
  • Assist superintendent with check-ins and annual performance reviews
  • Proactively plan and communicate
  • Invest in personal tools and equipment per the required tool list found in this job description
  • Possess technical and working knowledge of building methods and construction practice

Qualifications and Skills

  • 6+ years of high-end residential carpentry experience
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings and specifications
  • Ability to line out crew and subcontractors and communicate/maintain Dowbuilt quality standards
  • Valid driver’s license. Must have reliable, personal transportation to get to/from work safely and on time.  Appropriate personal vehicle recommended that facilitates transport of essential tools/materials, and capable of accomplishing common job-site related errands and tasks. Company vehicles are not assigned to foremen, although occasional driving of a company vehicle may be required.
  • Must complete or already have acquired the appropriate safety training commensurate with the position and location (ongoing safety training provided)
  • Ability to follow instructions, take notes and perform work as designated
  • Ability to be an active listener, ask for help and suggest solutions
  • Demonstrate discretion and treat all proprietary company information as strictly confidential outside, and in some cases within, the company
  • Be a team player and foster a positive and constructive attitude environment onsite
  • Exhibit good manners, respect for the team, subcontractors and clients
  • Consistently work toward a high level of accuracy and efficiency
  • Possess technical and working knowledge of building methods and construction practice; continually learn and develop new skills and capabilities
  • Ability to manage stress and maintain composure in challenging situations
  • Demonstrate accountability
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with a wide variety of people
  • Familiar with accurate layout and setting of concrete forms, familiar with how to place re-steel for footings and foundations
  • Working knowledge of layout and install of wall framing, floors and roof systems, stairs, windows and doors
  • Working knowledge of local building codes and required inspections
